Surfing Sennen Cove: Surf Spot Guide

This area in west Cornwall is considered to pick up the most swell that the Atlantic has to offer. A general rule of thumb is that if it’s flat here, most other places will lack waves too. Another is that the further north you go at Sennen Cove, also known as Whitesand Bay, the bigger the waves will be. It is popular with all levels of surfers and it can sometimes get busy. North of Sennen is Gwenver, a slightly more exposed, less accessible beach break that is often quieter.

Sennen Cove - What Waves, When

Sennen works most consistently on low and mid tides. Usually, the further north you head the bigger the surf will be.

Mid tide is usually best. There are a range of left and right peaks on offer and the quality of these is subject to how the sand has shifted and settled below.

At high tide it is often an unsurfable shore dump.

Easterly winds are offshore, and these can contribute to a steeper wave shape, which can barrel on the occasion.

Sennen Cove – Out of the Water

Sennen is a small place that sees an influx of tourists and surfers during the summer and other holiday periods. There is a surf shop, and surf hire and lessons are available at the beach.

For post-surf refreshment there’s a beach cafe / restaurant, as well as other options nearby, such as a pub.

For accommodation, there are camping & caravanning sites and holiday cottages all near Sennen. For more choice you don’t need to travel far. Penzance is less than ten miles away and has most things you could want.

Sennen cove is around one mile from Land’s End. Land’s End is known as the most westerly part of mainland England.
