Surfing Gwithian: Surf Spot Guide

Gwithian lies in the northeast of St Ives Bay. Selections of popular, beginner friendly beach break peaks are on offer. North of Gwithian is Godrevy, which is slightly more exposed. Gwithian and Godrevy are popular with surfers of all abilities, and also holiday makers wanting to appreciate miles of golden sand. The water isn’t often too busy compared to other UK spots; there are plenty of peaks to choose from across a huge stretch of sand. There are basic amenities available and you don’t have to travel far for more options.

Gwithian - What Waves, When

Best surfed on low and mid tides, Gwithian offers a pealing wave that is manageable for beginners when it’s not too big.

On a good day with a westerly swell and southeast to easterly winds, there can be some long rides with a lot of shoulder to play on.

The further south you walk, the smaller the wave usually is. Godrevy, to the north, is usually bigger but more blown out.

Gwithian – Out of the Water

In the area there are surf schools and a shop for surf purchase and hire.

There’s a beach cafe for post-surf refreshment, and a restaurant and a pub / Inn can be found nearby too.

Camping, chalets, BnB’s and holiday cottages are on offer for accommodation around Gwithian and Godrevy, and there’s more choice the further you are willing to travel.

Hayle, close by to the south, offers more amenities.
