As surfers, we’re pretty like-minded. We love the beach, the sea, the sun, even the cold. We love nature. But how many of us fit the environmentalist stereotype? Most of us are environmentally conscious and wouldn’t intentionally pollute. But we also have cars, we drive, we traverse the globe. We’re unknowingly hypocritical. We use mass-produced boards, mass-produced wax and our wetsuits are made from petroleum that harms the ocean. We all believe in environmental causes, but few of us ever follow this through with the products we use and the actions we take. Luckily, eco-friendly alternatives to surfing equipment are...

So the weekend of the 11th of jan 2014 was a big one for the surfer girls of Mexico. Why, you ask? Because it was the Damas Primero, the first all-girls surfing event the country has ever seen, and boy was it a goodie. Held at Pascuales, a thriving little Mexican beach town which, in the summer, is home to 20ft sandy bottomed barrels, and in the winter holds head high quick tubes. Around 30 girls of all ages committed for the event, and about twice as many guys came to oggle. I unfortunately have a seperated rib so have been...

In January a small group of us embarked on a journey to Fuerteventura for 10 days of sun and surfing. We spent our days travelling around the island in our Fiat Pandas to different surf spots, catching the waves of our lives and feeling a million miles away from the cold and dark seas in the UK. Sea and air temperatures averaged around 20 degrees and flights are frequent from many aiports across the UK. The island is uncrowded with a chilled surfing vibe surrounded by dormant volcanos offering an interesting backdrop to every surf.  Staying in the north of the...

Taking everything but the kitchen sink. Well in my case when I packed to travel the world I think I may of taken the kitchen sink, along with all the kitchen appliances. Travelling lightly wasn't really an option once you've decided to travel with all your toys. Toys being two 8ft SUPS, wetsuits and longboards alongside suitcases that were just within the weight! Taking all your toys comes at a price (literally) in so many ways as the airline will take every advantage of the fact that you have to take your very heavy items by attempting to charge the earth...

So a month has been and gone in our beautiful Sayulita, a small tourist town halfway down the Pacific coast. It was the first stop on our journey and the perfect place to start. Being just an hours bus journey away from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is a breeze to get to and from. Just head to any bus stand and there'll be a guide there, tell him where you want to go and he'll point out and stop the bus for you. Most bus journeys are pretty cheap, around 20 Pesos, so try and avoid giving them big notes. They hate...

The Barefoot Guide to the Central Coast Down under part one... Thinking of taking a trip down under?! why are you even thinking about it? book a ticket right now. Well maybe just wait a few minutes and read this first (both parts) so you can get an idea of what it's like ... So I thought I'd give you a bit of an insight into what to expect financially upon visiting the country, so its not so much of a shock to your wallet (but I've also included a lot of information that's not about such a dry subject, so bear...

So I've been asked to write a little about myself (Myself being Maddie Meddings), and I'm sure, inquisitive readers as you are, you want to know a little about the person whose opinions and thoughts are being spread all over this blog. So for the next however many words I'm gunna be doing something I do really well, talking about myself. I'm not particularly narcissistic and I don't 'love myself' in any sense at all, in actual fact sometimes I really dislike myself, e.g. when I mess up a perfect wave, or get drunk and talk like a prat or forget...
