Jack Johns taking it to the next level. Photo by John Isaac.     The other day I had a go on one of Sally Parkin’s Original Surfboards. Commonly known as Bellyboards, they’ve made a huge comeback in the last few years.   As the name suggests, these were one of the pioneering designs during the birth of surfing in the UK. But more on that in a later article. Today I just want to share my thoughts on going from standing on a polyurethane board to lying on a plywood one. So here are the five things I learnt from...

Jesus Longboard Classic 2014   Get yourself down to Polzeath this weekend for the eighth annual Jesus Longboard Classic. This yearly competition sees some of the UK's best longboarders pitted against each other. As well as a few with perhaps a bit more faith than talent. In partnership with the Tubestation Polzeath, Nineplus, Riz Boardshorts, 360 Photography and Finisterre, this comp has become a really popular event. It's now known for being tonnes of fun and a great way to round off the longboard contest season. What's that? You're an awesome longboarder and you just need a way to show it...

What's the best thing to wear under your wetsuit? Boardies, boxers or my personal choice; old school naked. And which option is most comfortable and convenient?   Boardies Boardies, the standard choice of the newbie. Your first time sliding into the rubber and you're fully kitted in your beach boardies and your shiny new rash vest.  No need for a towel. You slip straight in, zip up and are immediately aware that you've become victim to a terrible wedgie and a rash vest which now fits like your sister's tube top. Ready to dive into your session you have no...

First and foremost I am an artist. That’s what I told the career adviser at school and he told me the world was full of artists and I should be a Quantity Surveyor. Well, forty years on and I am still an artist….and an architect….and a farmer…and a surfer….so to heck with him! I’ve been painting the North Cornwall seascape ever since we set up home nearby in 1996. Getting to grip with a loose watercolour style which could evoke the energy of the Atlantic surf was a real challenge and took lots of experimentation before I ended up with...

Photo credit: Deborah Eastman   Another headlight flashes by in a blur of semi consciousness. Still not quite awake yet, I try to focus on the road. It’s about 7:30 on a winter morning and the day is just beginning to break across the sky.   Just another driver on the road, feelings full of dread as another day of work approaches. I look up at the sky, “It’s going to be a nice day” I think to myself - a welcomed rest-bite from the recent storms. My gaze is slowly drawn out across the bay and I notice a nice...

Dear Captivated Audience. I'm writing to provide the "broke" surfer with a guide. Broke being a flexible word in this article. For me it's broken as in "Ouch my knee bent the wrong way." Also I will include all of you that suffer with "Crap, my only surfboard is broken" and "Crap, I'm stone broke again." My aim is to help all of us to find things to do when broke , broken or broke is included in our status. Being a surfer reading this you will all know there has been a time when one (or all) of the...

Sunset Sons   I think it’s about time we shamelessly plugged a band. So for our plugging debut we’ve chosen Sunset Sons; a four piece surf rock band out of Hossegor. We’ve chosen well. These guys actually rock. With a mixture of smooth melodies and gritty attitude they look, feel and sound like the guys you want to surf with.   Pete tearing it up in Bali   The three parts British, one part Australian group are quickly becoming the next big thing. And because their fame isn’t based on a quirk or gimmick, we’ve got a feeling they’ll stay on...

I’ll be honest. I have no idea who the current ASP World Champion is. And I don’t care. I want to say it's Slater, but for all I know it could be Alan Rickman. Having actually met most of the guys on the World Tour I can assure you, as with any pro athlete, their most interesting trait is their talent. It’s not a bad thing; we’re talking a stupid amount of talent. But it does mean when I open a surf magazine on a double page spread about Mick Fanning’s knee operation or Steph Gilmore’s favourite chapstick I die...

Jay Adams, one of the original Z-Boys has died of an apparent heart attack while on a surfing trip in Mexico. Adams is best known as a member of the Zephyr skate team from Santa Monica. The group of friends are widely credited with giving birth to and pioneering modern skateboarding. Their low-slung, deep-carve skating style was unlike anything the 70s skateboarding world had seen. Their moves, and attitude, quickly caught on around the world. As well as skateboarding competitions, Adams won various surf contests and earned nicknames like Pure Seed and The Chosen One. Most obituaries will focus on...
