There's a magnificent amount of things about surfing we just love; the ocean,  glassy barrels,  new wetsuits,  Kelly Slater’s lack of hair,  a fresh board, the smell of wax (to the extent where most of us have given it a sneaky lick).  And although it's a sport we all love, there are just a few things that can make our surf day an unhappy one. A wet wetsuit On a dank frosty winter's day the surf is still pumping from your session the previous day.  But after returning home cold, wet, tired and hungry you dismiss the dismal 5 minute task of cleaning and...

I stumbled upon Flow Surf and Skate in Porthcawl, South Wales, earlier this year. The unpretentious shop is home to surfboards, skateboards, wetsuits, clothing, sunglasses and much more and they are accompanied by friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. I asked the owner Matt a few questions about the shop and their involvement in the local Welsh community.   Could you tell me a bit about the shop? Well the shop has been a long time coming really. Probably about five years in the making. I've always wanted to run my own business as I think I'm a bit of a jack...

Five reasons girls are better at surfing   Let’s face it. Sally Fitzgibbons is surfing like Slater in his prime. Bethany Hamilton just won the Women’s Surf n' Sea Pipeline with one arm. And Carissa Moore can fly. Clearly the fairer sex has an unfair advantage. And here’s why:     5. Multitasking The average female can, in one moment, talk on the phone, write a letter, paint a picture and develop a cure for chickenpox. And talk on another phone. So really, navigating the line-up, incoming waves, close-out sets, rocks and tourists is the mental equivalent of a long nose...

Fiji Bula! And welcome to Fiji, one of the most exciting stops on tour. The past couple of days have produced some big surf, and the forecast looks promising for a good contestable size during the running window. The venue: Cloudbreak is a crazy wave. Breaking a couple kilometres off the coast of Tavarua, it’s exposed to massive swells and can break up to 30ft+. Predominantly a barrel-riding contest, Cloudbreak tests the competitors in not only their skills, but the size of their cojones. If Cloudbreak gets too sketchy the contest can be moved to Restaurants.  Restaurants is more sheltered from the...

Well this past season has felt a bit like “The Endless Winter”, with a ridiculous amount of storm surf battering the U.K. In North Cornwall the surfers have been frothing for months, with point breaks and reefs firing for weeks on end, and rare gems have shown that they’re capable of breaking more than just once-in-a-blue-moon. On St. Piran’s day though, the sun finally broke through the ever present cloud cover and shone over the sodden land. Spring had arrived. Even the howling South-Westerlies that we’ve become so accustomed to switched to Easterlies. All the conditions came together, everything apart from...

What feedback are we looking for? We've been getting great feedback about our forecast accuracy (keep them coming in so breaks can be tuned). Now we can turn our efforts to developing a new mobile friendly version of the Hotswell website. We are keen to get your feedback on any areas we can add or improve on. The mobile version of the break page will be a completely new layout, so here's your opportunity to help us create your perfect page for when you're out on the road. We are currently planning the following Table type layout (no slider) No Map or Compass...

So the Quick Pro was won by the young Gabriel Medina. I don’t think anyone really expected it, and what was really interesting was that he won with just strong backhand rail surfing, no aerial trickeries. On the way to his win, he beat Taj, Mick, and Parko, who let’s be honest, were all favourites. http://www.aspworldtour.com/events/mct/649/drug-aware-margaret-river-pro I think it’s tough to predict who’s going to win at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro (The next CT stop), but I’m sure the Aussie’s and Hawaiians will dominate if it’s classic big and mean main break. If it’s smaller than it could turn...

Introducing the Pasty Pocket®   The patented Pasty Pocket® keeps your favourite snack warm and dry during a long, cold surf. With the famous energy-supplying power of the pasty, you can now increase your surf time by up to 50%.   The pioneers behind the pocket  The Pasty Pocket® is the brainchild of wetsuit designers and Cornish bakers, who one fateful day noticed a gap in the market while sitting out back. Hundreds of designs, prototypes and pasties later and they’d patented the world’s first impermeable portable pastry purse. The rest, as they say, is history.     Here comes the science...

So the weekend of the 11th of jan 2014 was a big one for the surfer girls of Mexico. Why, you ask? Because it was the Damas Primero, the first all-girls surfing event the country has ever seen, and boy was it a goodie. Held at Pascuales, a thriving little Mexican beach town which, in the summer, is home to 20ft sandy bottomed barrels, and in the winter holds head high quick tubes. Around 30 girls of all ages committed for the event, and about twice as many guys came to oggle. I unfortunately have a seperated rib so have been...

Image source: cargocollective.com Why do surfers make the best lovers?   As we all know, surfers are roughly one  gillion times better in bed than the average human. It’s a phenomenon that’s baffled our brightest scientists for generations. So today we’ll be delving deep, ahem, into this issue and coming to a reasonable conclusion why surfers are burdened with the libido of a drunk, horny T-Rex on steroids.   1. Modesty We don’t like to brag. As you may have noticed. Which is a very attractive quality. Sexual prowess speaks for itself and if ours could talk it would sound like...
