The wave rears up behind you. You paddle, you kick, you stick one arm out and try to follow the curl with the piece of wood strapped to your hand. Surfing this ain't.   The art and craft of Handplaning has, like all surf sports, gone from obscurity to confused recognition to a careful science. And nowhere moreso than in Cornwall. It's not surprising. As the unofficial centre of surfing in the UK, Cornwall always sees the latest trend literally take shape. So during a summer laboured with one-too-many duckpond days, local surfers and shapers began whittling down bits of...

The Smoothstar claims to improve your surfing ability by simulating the feeling of riding a wave. And it definitely looks like a smooth ride. Whether it helps your surfing or not, it looks awesome.   A complete setup will cost you around £200. Quite pricey for a streetboard, but could be worth every penny if it can pull a Miyagi and secretly improve your abilities. Check out their website here.   Alfie Hayward ...

The man behind some of the best surf films of the 90s has died at 54. Sonny Miller gave us a series of Rip Curl classics like The Search, Tripping the Planet and Searching for Tom Curren. While famous for his love of 16mm film, he later moved on to work on big-budget Hollywood productions like Riding Giants, Billabong Odyssey and Die Another Day. Sonny was loved among the pro circuit for his heartwarming presence and skill with a camera. Kelly Slater described him as "...always happy and positive and truly epitomised the meaning of being stoked". For one last taste...

Surrounded on all sides by ocean and mountains, Wales is a land steeped in folklore. It’s a rugged country, filled with rugged people. Recently I’ve had the good fortune to get to know the ancient land of Cymru and its surf much better. There are times when Wales reminds me a lot of my home in North Cornwall, but then there are times when the land seems completely foreign to me, with enormous mountains rising out of the sea protecting the land behind them. It seems completely plausible to witness great fire-breathing dragons coiled around the summits of the mountains, shrouded...

This morning I got out of bed and went for a surf. Except I didn’t. I went for what can only be described as a popandflop. I popped up, I flopped over, I gave up. Honestly I can’t remember the last time I was so lame. If there was a graph of my performance from every surf I’ve ever had, I don’t think I’ve ever been as high on the ‘Good’ scale as I was low on the ‘Crap’ scale today. And it got me thinking, what makes you really bad at surfing? We’ve all had those days where you’re...
