What are the other 24 doing?

A little while ago I was surfing with a friend at our local break.

We were a bit to the right of the main peak.

Because there were about 30 other people over there.

And after a while we noticed a funny thing.

In about an hour and a half of being in the water, we’d seen a lot of waves being ridden at the main peak.

But only by about five or six people.

Out of about 30.

It was the same few people getting the waves every time.

So I couldn’t help but wonder, what’s everyone else doing?

Afterwards I realised this isn’t that unusual.

Thinking back over all the times I’ve been sat out back watching people take waves.

It’s always the same people.

In every session there are five or so surfers who seem to be constantly on a wave.

I don’t think this is due to skill.

I’m far from pro and I do okay, I get plenty of waves.

So what’s everyone else doing?

Waiting for the perfect wave?

Posing?

Nursing a hangover?

Surely not all of them.

Not 24 people for an hour and a half.

Is there a secret society of non-surfers?

A pact made by normal people to paddle out and just sit there?

Maybe.

Next time you’re out in the water have a look around.

See what’s going on.

You might just uncover a conspiracy.

Or if you're skint, just copy and paste one of the images below onto your Valentine's Facebook page. If that doesn't do the trick, they clearly have no feelings.
