Hot Reviews: Bamboozz Sunglasses

Nick and Alfie putting the Hot in Hotswell.

Here at Hotswell we’re dedicated to improving the surf industry by playing with cool new stuff people send us for free.

Today it’s Bamboozz Sunglasses; sexy, eco-friendly bamboo-framed shades with polarised lenses and a nifty little tube case thingy. But how well do they stand up to our rigorous testing criteria?

Test one

How cool do you look when someone says “That’s impossible” and you whip them off your face and say “Or is it?”

4/5

Since you’ll probably be the only person around wearing bamboo sunglasses, you’ll look like you know something everyone else doesn’t anyway. Which adds an air of authority to your suggestion that some mad scheme is, in fact, possible. And the spring hinges allow you to remove them with a slick sideways action without damaging the frames or your face. Plus they look pretty cool to begin with, which helps.

But we had to dock a point because they’re so light it’s easy to accidentally throw them across the room when you whip them off.

Test two

Can you open them with one hand like Wesley Snipes in Blade?

2/5

Short answer, no.

It’s possible to open one of the arms with one hand but the hinges are so springy it takes far too long to flick the other open. It can be done by carefully triangulating your finger placement on the open side and maintaining its position through the flicking motion. But when you need a protractor to open sunglasses you lose that Wesley Snipes cool.

However they gain points for having such robust hinges.

Test three

Do they shield your eyes enough for you to check someone out without them knowing?

5/5

If you suffer from eye-slippage, and who doesn’t, these are the sunnies for you. Firstly the high quality polarised lenses offer excellent pupil-direction camouflage. But as an added bonus, the sleek bamboo frames are so attractive your subject will be staring too hard at them to notice where your eyes are going.

Well played Bamboozz, well played.

Test four

When you’re at a rave, are they so cool some girl will shamelessly walk up to you and steal them? And if so, how easy will they be to find again?

4/5

High marks here because while they’re quirky and desirable, they have an air of quality which makes them obviously day to day sunnies rather than novelty ones. So they’re probably only in danger after midnight when people really stop caring. But being made of bamboo they’ll be fairly easy to locate again.

However, at £45 - £65 a pop, if you wear them to a rave you probably deserve to have them nicked.

Test five

Do they actually offer any protection from the sun?

4/5

Yes they do. All their lenses are UVA/UVB polarised so they’re ideal for wearing at the beach or on a snowy mountain. And while the frames are quite chunky, they hug your face nicely and don’t let in too much side glare.

And being made of wood they won’t heat up and burn your nose on a hot day. We’re looking at you, metal frames.

Also all the bamboo is cultivated responsibly and they have an excellent recycling policy. Which is nice.

Final score: 76%

So all in all we’re fans of Bamboozz sunglasses. They look cool, fit comfortably and make you feel like a sexy Robinson Crusoe.

  • Surfing Valentine's Cards ~ Now you can actually buy them!

Surfers are sweet. Sometimes salty, but mostly sweet. And to prove it here are some surfing-themed Valentine's cards. You can buy them from our Zazzle shop. Or if you're skint, just copy and paste one of the images below onto your Valentine's Facebook page. If that doesn't do the trick, they clearly have no feelings.
