Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015

Day 5 - 18th September

Ain Daab Casablanca

Repercharge 3 – Men’s Open

Seb Smart was up bright and early. He'd also been one of the only surfers to brave the layday stormy conditions. Sebastian picked out the big ones that stood up and made his turns big. He scored enough on just a few waves, then his leash snapped making for a testing swim back to shore. No worries for Seb as he finished in second.

Snapped leash, the price for charging hard.

Repercharge 3 – Men’s Open

Sam Harwood opened up with his high score of the heat at 4.17. He followed up with a few closeouts that left him scrapping at the last minute for a backup score of 5.07, alas the wave he needed didn’t come.

Repercharge 3 – Men’s Open

Dave paddled out with clear tactics. He was focused on being picky and waited for the right wave. Probably a good plan given the lack of quality waves. This heat didn’t give the goods leaving Dave ending on a closeout putting him out of the game.

Progressive 3 – Women’s Open

Georgie Timson was lined up with Pauline Ado, Lucia Martino and Valentina Vitale, solid competition. Georgie played her forehand as she found a steep left working; snaps, cutbacks and carving all the way through. She only needed a little over a 3 at the end but with world tour level competition she’d have had to pull something special out of the bag. Georgie has another shot in the repercharge.

Repercharge 4 – Men’s Open

Seb Smart again, new leash! Seb was flying in this heat, all the scores coming from big hacking cutbacks, off the tops, fins out and spray flying. Seb won this heat against tough competitors that were only small scores behind.

Repercharge 4 – Women’s Open

Georgie in this heat was quite evenly matched and on her day our girl could definitely get through. But not today, as unfortunately the right waves didn’t open for her. Well done to Georgie for representing for the English women.

Repercharge 5 – Men’s Open

Seb Smart was on fire here. He displayed style and flair and was exciting to watch in the sea. He even pulled out a Superman Air in the heat and was only awarded low points for this and other exciting moves. The judges were after powerful turns above the lip which was just a different way to go. Seb did well and surfed a long hard day.

Progressive 3 - Bodyboard Ladies

Megan Penny back on board today with a real tough heat. Effectively the small final of the progressive rounds. Megan remained focused on making big manoeuvres and holding off on the whitewater turns, which, unfortunately her competitors turned to in the end to bag more points. Megan still surfs the repo final tomorrow and let’s hope she earns a spot in the big final and therefore the podium.

Keep checking back for the latest from the competition.
