The 2015 Aquajuice British Schools Surf Championships

It is official, Surfing GB’s 2015 competition season has begun and the season is now in full swing as we saw the trophies awarded, bragging rights distributed and stoke shared in Bude over the weekend of April 25th & 26th in a record breaking 2015 Aquajuice British Schools Surf Championships.

122 entries from 38 Schools made up the entry for the event, which is a new record and confirms this events place as the most prestigious Schools surf event in Britain. In typical British fashion Mother Nature had a tough time making her mind up on the conditions she wanted us to play with, so as the forecasts twisted and turned in the build-up the event was eventually called on, with the reports suggesting a weekend of changing weather systems but plenty of swell.

As dawn broke on day one of the event the surf pushed in at around the 2ft range and the vibe was of excitement and eagerness to get in the water. The first event of the year always providing an opportunity for the surfers to show how they have progressed, whilst being given a weekend to enjoy with their friends only adds to joys of spring as winter becomes a fading memory. The sponsors Aquajuice, Surfdome, Acer, Billabong, Santa Cruz, Carve Visionaries, Elements Hotel and Vospers motors all contributing to create a comfy and enjoyable hub for competitors and supporters in the small tented village erected for the event along the cliff edge overlooking the contest area.

Day one was one for the younger competitors as the contest officials awaited the larger swell forecasted for day 2, but with almost 40 surfers in the U16 boys division the task in hand was to cater for the mass entry. 15 minute heats and a highly competitive entry made for exciting viewing with wave selection high on the surfers agenda. 8 hours of surfing later and the tide withdrawing it was time to call it a day.

6:30am on day two was the moment contest officials arrived at the beach and said their prayers and called on Poseidon and Huey to wake up and give us some waves. Someone was listening anyway as the tide turned and a morning of fun waves in the 2ft with the occasional 3ft range with some superb banks allowing for perfectly formed peaks to arrive from the shore line and the high scores began to drop.

The finals commenced as the crowd looked on from the cliff top, music and commentary filtering through the air as oooo’s and ahhh’s could be heard by the teams and their supports as their surfers hit the lips and chucked buckets in search of the judge’s approval.
