Five reasons girls are better at surfing

Let’s face it. Sally Fitzgibbons is surfing like Slater in his prime. Bethany Hamilton just won the Women’s Surf n' Sea Pipeline with one arm.

And Carissa Moore can fly.

Clearly the fairer sex has an unfair advantage. And here’s why:

5. Multitasking

The average female can, in one moment, talk on the phone, write a letter, paint a picture and develop a cure for chickenpox. And talk on another phone.

So really, navigating the line-up, incoming waves, close-out sets, rocks and tourists is the mental equivalent of a long nose blow.

Fair? No. True? Shut up.

4. Centre of gravity

This is actually scientifically proven. By Dr Schniedlhvshm…Phd. Being smaller with a lower centre of gravity means you can balance better, pop up quicker, make tighter turns and ride dogs like horses. And since the average woman is roughly 5½ inches tall (Schniedlhvshm et al, 2014), it turns out my year 9 rugby coach was right. Surfing really is for little girls.

3. Boobs

float.

2. Organisation

A good surf is often the result of a lot of planning. Checking the surf forecasts, historic data, webcams and eyeball reports is a job for someone whose attention span goes beyond the next shiny thing they see. Yes, surf forecasts are becoming simpler and more accurate. But I still get distracted by clouds and laser pointers.

1. No girl will ever jump onto her board and squash her balls.

Any other ideas? Chuck 'em in the comments below.

Also, the Hotswell Online Surf Shop is now open, stocked up with the very best surf gear for men and women.

Happy surfing!

  • Six Species of Surfer

Admit it. We're a weird bunch. Here are six of the creatures you'll find yourself mingling with in the line up.   (Illustrations by Andi Pratt. Check out more of his crazy work here and on Instagram.)     And all together:       So which one are you? Or are you a different beast entirely? Let us know in the comments below.   ...

  • Surfing Valentine's Cards ~ Now you can actually buy them!

Surfers are sweet. Sometimes salty, but mostly sweet. And to prove it here are some surfing-themed Valentine's cards. You can buy them from our Zazzle shop. Or if you're skint, just copy and paste one of the images below onto your Valentine's Facebook page. If that doesn't do the trick, they clearly have no feelings. Click on any image to view it in the shop.   ...
