Sunset Sons   I think it’s about time we shamelessly plugged a band. So for our plugging debut we’ve chosen Sunset Sons; a four piece surf rock band out of Hossegor. We’ve chosen well. These guys actually rock. With a mixture of smooth melodies and gritty attitude they look, feel and sound like the guys you want to surf with.   Pete tearing it up in Bali   The three parts British, one part Australian group are quickly becoming the next big thing. And because their fame isn’t based on a quirk or gimmick, we’ve got a feeling they’ll stay on...

I’ll be honest. I have no idea who the current ASP World Champion is. And I don’t care. I want to say it's Slater, but for all I know it could be Alan Rickman. Having actually met most of the guys on the World Tour I can assure you, as with any pro athlete, their most interesting trait is their talent. It’s not a bad thing; we’re talking a stupid amount of talent. But it does mean when I open a surf magazine on a double page spread about Mick Fanning’s knee operation or Steph Gilmore’s favourite chapstick I die...

Jay Adams, one of the original Z-Boys has died of an apparent heart attack while on a surfing trip in Mexico. Adams is best known as a member of the Zephyr skate team from Santa Monica. The group of friends are widely credited with giving birth to and pioneering modern skateboarding. Their low-slung, deep-carve skating style was unlike anything the 70s skateboarding world had seen. Their moves, and attitude, quickly caught on around the world. As well as skateboarding competitions, Adams won various surf contests and earned nicknames like Pure Seed and The Chosen One. Most obituaries will focus on...

The story of Passenger Clothing   These days the term ‘surf brand’ covers everything from sponsored lip gloss to supermarket own-label clothing. The core few surfing companies we grew up with have inflated astronomically and are now less surf brands as any-sport-not-involving-a-ball brands. So it’s no wonder smaller independent companies are cropping up with simpler values and a more down-to-earth take on beach life. Passenger Clothing is one such company. Openly not a surf brand, Passenger describes itself as a surf lifestyle label. This isn’t splitting hairs, there’s a marked difference. In the old days surf brands were all about...

When I was introduced to surfing I was told it’s better than sex. Having never surfed before I thought the guy telling me this was a total madman. But after a few sessions borrowing his spare board and wettie, I was hooked.   Six years later I'm still a surf junkie, writing about why surfing is, in fact (100% fact, possibly, maybe), better than sex. I suppose when he reads this he'll be saying, “I told you so!”     1. Surfing lasts longer   Research shows the average male lasts 14 minutes. How long do you usually surf for?...
